Clockwise from the bottom left:
- I can't imagine any state would require an individual's weight to be listed on their driver's license. New York definitely doesn't have a weight listing. There were a handful of other more believable directions Leroy could have gone. He could have said Loretta is trying to get back to her college weight or the weight that she thinks she is in her mind. Driver's license weight is just nonsensical. Still, the real goal behind his comment is to draw attention to how buffoonish Loretta looks working out on her mercilessly strained exercise ball, which Leroy manages to do. Leroy gets the first point and leads 1-0.
- With today being Mother's Day and all I would have been quite disappointed if there wasn't at least one panel involving a visit from Loretta's mother. Though she hasn't arrived yet at this point, Leroy is already fully prepared to greet her in the customary fashion. Is Leroy's exaggerated attempt at a smile an overly juvenile move? Of course, but it's still good enough for a point. Leroy rushes ahead to a 2-0 lead.
- Kudos for Leroy for finding a way to mock Loretta's cooking outside of the kitchen/dinning room environment. If Leroy can continue to find more ways to insult Loretta's cooking skills outside of the home, he just may have a chance at winning out the year. The reference to Loretta's inedible meals curtailing gluttony is such an obvious joke that I'm surprised it hasn't been covered already. In shocking fashion, Leroy has managed to take the first three points of the Showdown to clinch victory. Now the only question is, can he make it a five point sweep? Leroy leads 3-0.
- Loretta finally comes through on the fourth panel and manages to preserve a little bit of pride. Her jab at Leroy comes off as particularly blunt and cruel. There isn't much wordplay or cleverness to it, she's basically saying her husband got fat and bald since she married him. If this were a non-Sunday panel, I would have had a difficult time distilling the message any further. It's just a shot of straight nastiness by Loretta. Loretta gets her first point and trails Leroy 3-1.
- It is interesting how just the inclusion of Loretta turns the activity of fishing from one of Leroy's favorite pursuits into a reasonable facsimile of Hell. Being trapped on a small boat with no one else but Loretta for hours upon hours; it's an absolute nightmare. Even the fish know well enough to steer clear of the Lockhorns when they're together. Though the final score turned out to be close, this Showdown was already over by the third scene. Loretta's sabotage of Leroy's fishing trip earns her a point but the final score gives the day to Leroy 3-2.
