June 5, 2011: Sunday Showdown!

• I'm not sure if Loretta has a full grasp on the phrase "born yesterday". No one is actually saying that someone is literally a day old newborn when they refer to them as having been "born yesterday"; they mean that the person is acting dumb or foolish as if they were just born yesterday. Loretta seems to think she's come up with a whole new variation on the phrase when she's just redundantly using it in the exact manner which it is normally used. However, at the end of the day (or ruined party) it is still an insult and a valid point for Loretta.
• Why doesn't Leroy just lock the bathroom door when he goes to weigh himself on the scale? After all these years he must be acutely aware of how much of a sitting duck it makes him. By now Loretta has probably fine tuned her hearing to be able to always detect the sound of Leroy getting on the bathroom scale from anywhere in the house (of course with feet that big, even the neighbors can probably hear him stomping around). Loretta appears to be running away with another showdown as she goes up 2-0.
• Loretta shouldn't look so miffed about Leroy's optimistic projection, it'll be six or seven glorious weeks of separation for her as well. I suspect she's more upset that she didn't get to praise jury duty before Leroy. Really either Lockhorn could have said the line and have gotten the credit. Fortunately for Leroy, he manages to be quicker on the draw and prevents Loretta from clinching the day and keeps his hopes alive for a comeback victory. It's 2-1, Loretta.
• I find Loretta's statement to be a bit confusing. So Leroy's promise to "love, honor, and cherish" were seen as threats by Loretta? Is she relieved that his promise to do these things turned out to be hollow and that he has done none of them? It would make more sense if Loretta was lamenting over the fact that Leroy's promises were idle, but by calling them threats and not specifying whether it was a positive or negative development that he didn't carry through on them makes the whole thing ambiguous. In the end it's a moot point though since Leroy isn't even in the panel. Push.
• Loretta dips into a little legalese for her high brow zinger at Leroy. Most likely Loretta is using the phrase figuratively, basically saying that Leroy's attention and mind are dedicated to television. However, there might be a possibility that she is being far more literal and stating that Leroy only consumes movies, books, etc. that are in the public domain (maybe because he's cheap or old?). There could also be a third reading; that all the works of intellectual property Leroy has created are no longer protected or have been forfeited (old and stupid?). Loretta clinches yet another Sunday Showdown, 3-1.
