August 25, 2013: Sunday Showdown!

Clockwise from the bottom left:
  • I find this to be a totally legitimate complaint by Leroy. Maybe more modern cars have them visible all the time but I'm assuming most cars with digital displays won't show the odometer number until it is turned on. I suppose the owner should have written the total mileage out on this "For Sale" sign. These must be constant frustrations for Leroy during his never ending quest to find replacement cars after Loretta totals another automobile. It's a humorless but realistic push. The score remains 0-0.
  • Oh the classic gender specific toilet seat placements joke, it's probably as old as the toilet itself. This is really the exact kind of humor that most captures the Lockhorns as a whole. I'm surprised they don't do it even more often. As for the panel, I considered giving Loretta the credit here but it's Leroy that looks to be in the victor's position. He is unrepentant about keeping the toilet seat up as he lazily lies back on his recliner. The compromise solution to all this would be a recliner with a built in toilet, then Leroy could be lazy and there'd be no lid issues. Leroy gets the point and leads 1-0.
  • Why are the Lockhorns so frequently calling customer service lines? Is it an issue with one company or with many companies? As residents of Nassau county there are plenty of service and utility providers that could be the culprits. Given all the car accidents by Loretta I'm sure they're always in contact with their auto insurance provider. I'm going to go with the cable company; always one of the worst offenders. Once again this is a relatable pet peeve but ultimately a pointless push. Leroy continues to lead 1-0.
  • The obvious joke is that Leroy hates being married to Loretta, but why would that translate into referring to your wife in air quotes? It's not like he doesn't believe the marriage is legitimate; the legitimacy of his marriage is what's causing him to be so unhappy. I suppose "wife" could have broader implications of affection and dedication, so maybe he just wants to make it clear that Loretta is his "wife" in strictly the legal sense. Loretta gets a point for calling out Leroy. The score is tied 1-1.
  • What could the Lockhorns be doing to keep getting kicked out of Olive Gardens? Also, why are they so loyal the chain? I suspect their constant ejections are related to abuses of their yearly "Never Ending Pasta Bowl" promotions. Of course you can't rule out the possibility that they're just plain terrible to be around. Given what Loretta says about their free dinner at Sizzler; they may be being paid by the Sizzler to disrupt business in their rival restaurants. It sounds like a sweet gig for the Lockhorns. Maybe Applebee's will hire them to cause trouble at local Chili's locations. It's a push for the panel and an overall push on the day as Leroy and Loretta end the showdown tied at 1-1.

Clockwise from to bottom left:
  • It was a borderline call but I'm going to have to rule that Leroy comes out on top in this panel. Loretta's the one criticizing Leroy but it certainly hasn't gotten to him. In fact Loretta's comments are more like a confirmation of Leroy's victory. All Loretta can do is complain as Leroy somehow gets away with being extra lazy. Maybe if Loretta had a vacuum or a bag of trash to be taken out in her other hand there might be enough of threat of immediate action to credit her a point. However, here there is nothing to indicate that Leroy won't continue to just be a lazy sack for the rest of the day. Leroy wins and takes 1-0 lead.
  • Leroy follows up his close win in the previous panel with a two for one insult special on Loretta and her mom. While Leroy has insulted Loretta's cooking in front of dinner guests many times before, this is the first time I recall where the guest was Loretta's mother. Clearly she does not agree with Leroy's evaluation of her daughter's cooking. I have to assume Loretta's mom's cooking is just as terrible . Leroy earns the point and surges to a 2-0 lead.
  • There goes my appetite for the upcoming week. There have been plenty of prior scenes with the Lockhorns on the bathroom scale, why does this particular scene need to feature Leroy in his underwear? I should be grateful I guess, he might have been wearing even less. Oddly enough though, Leroy still has his socks on. Perhaps he has some image issues with his feet? I know I do. Loretta picks the easy fruit and earns herself a point with a quick fat joke. Leroy still leads 2-1.
  • Loretta's dropping some deep insights into issues of presence, identity, and alienation in the age of social media. I struggled as to whether to categorize this as an insult to Leroy or a mere push. In the end I can't really give Loretta the points here. She's ostensibly criticizing the internet's affect on social interactions. There are plenty of ways she should have attacked Leroy (I for one would have made a comment about how he resembles an orangutan in this scene) but she laid off. It's a push. The score remains 2-1 in favor of Leroy.
  • That teal car isn't supposed to be a Porsche, right? It doesn't even look like a sports car, more like an affordable two door sedan. Leroy's friend seems to think it's quite dreamy. Leroy's comments about his marriage counselor bills fits with my long time view that their counselor Pullman only puts up with the Lockhorns for the steady financial rewards. Now the question is, why do the Lockhorns keep blowing good money on him? It's another push as Leroy wins a highly contentious Sunday victory 2-1.

Clockwise from the bottom left:
  • I was conflicted as to who to give the point to for this scene. Loretta doesn't clarify whether their garage is the storage area for all their past hobbies or just Leroy's past hobbies. Also, is there something all that wrong with trying a bunch of hobbies? I suppose the implication is that a garage full of old hobby stuff means you're a quitter; but really there are worse things to be. I decided that the dig was intended at Leroy judging by his unhappy reaction. At least he looks sharp in his suit. Loretta scores the first point and leads 1-0.
  • Was Loretta seriously expecting Leroy to accept her choice for an unbiased third party? Maybe she was hoping that Leroy didn't understand what the word meant. Fortunately for Leroy, he immediately calls her out on her not so subtle ruse. This is a sudden return of the wired home phone. Lately the Lockhorns had been fairly up to date with their communication devices; everything from cordless phones to email to smartphones. I like to think that Loretta's mother is so old fashioned that they actually have to call her on antiquated technology; though with her mother a telegraph would be more appropriate. Leroy wins the point. The score is tied 1-1.
  • Loretta's statement could also be read as a subtle confession and that she murdered Leroy. Leroy's limp, lifeless, position on the couch further lends plausibility to this theory. Though it's often threatened and sometimes attempted, Loretta murdering Leroy would never happen; it would be too ideal of a solution for both parties. Alas the universe deems that the Lockhorns must continue to live everyday without end in their own shared hell. However, one can dream. Loretta gets a point and takes a 2-1 lead.
  • Leroy looks more like he's suffering a massive stroke than cringing in this panel. I don't think either Lockhorn knows what cringing is. You would think that they'd be familiar with the expression since they see it so often in the faces the people near them when they start digging into each other in public. I always find it ridiculous seeing Loretta give driving instructions. It's like being taught archery by a blind person. Still, as beyond hypocritical as it is, Loretta earns herself a point. Loretta clinches the day 3-1.
  • Unfortunately there is no real "Uncle Funzie's" anywhere. I was more than a little disappointed at that discovery. I would have like to have seen this terrifying children's restaurant where frightening panda bear waiters with their cold dead eyes serve pizza and ice cream to chaotic rooms full of manic children. I especially like the little girl in the far right who looks to be having the worst time ever. I don't buy Leroy's excuse, I suspect he intentionally brought Loretta here to spite her. It worked. Leroy gets a point. However the day belongs to Loretta as she claims a 3-2 victory.

August 4, 2013: Sunday Showdown!

Clockwise from the bottom left:
  • I don't know why Loretta would be so disappointed with a car smelling like pizza. Personally I wouldn't mind my car to have the scent of a fresh pie (although I may object to cold). Perhaps the pizzas have toppings with more disagreeable smells. Leroy could have ordered double anchovies, garlic, or paid extra for some disgusting Ninja Turtles inspired custom toppings like hot fudge and extra cheese just to spite Loretta the next time she takes the car out for a reckless trip to the mall. Now I want to get a pizza. Leroy serves up a point and leads 1-0.
  • The Lockhorns, like many other households during this wintry economic climate seem to be losing sleep over the future of their finances. That's sort of it for this panel, there's no extra exaggeration or twist on that basic idea. It's fairly mild. I was originally thinking Loretta may have earned a point here but all she's doing is just raging on the economy. I think she missed a great opportunity to hit a dazed Leroy hard with quality barb; though I suppose I should cut her some slack since she just work up herself. It's a push. Leroy continues to lead 1-0.
  • Crazy Lockhorn viewing angles abound in this week's center panel. Leroy is just asking for another trip to the hospital with his beyond awkward positioning on the ladder. Although the fall probably won't be that hard since he's only up two rungs on his relatively short ladder. I think he could have changed that light bulb while on just a step ladder. I don't even want to get started on the usual placement and size of their light bulb; which apparently lights up the entire room. Loretta for her part pulls off the slightly cheesy bulb joke and earns herself her first point. The day is tied 1-1.
  • For people who wear the same outfit a majority of the time, the Lockhorns certainly have a large wardrobe to bring along on vacations. Perhaps Loretta over packs since vacations out of their usual Long Island milieu are the only place where the Lockhorns can dress differently. Leroy takes advantage of Loretta's packing problem and drops an old familiar complaint on her for the point. Leroy leads 2-1.
  • Loretta does not pull the punches here in the final panel. She attacks Leroy's physique all the time but this one came off as memorably extra mean. Loretta brings along what appears to be her friend from the center panel to bear witness to her smack down of Leroy's bod. She seems perpetually stuck with a blank, neutral expression. Decades of exposure to the Lockhorns' toxic world will turn anyone catatonic. Loretta earns the point and forces the day to end on a 2-2 push.
